NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office have arrested two men accused of stealing tractors and a pickup truck.
Daniel Stell, 19, of Nacogdoches, is charged with third-degree theft, state-jail felony theft and state-jail felony unauthorized use. Stephen Bryce, 20, is charged with third-degree theft.
According to Sheriff Jason Bridges, deputies stopped two tractors Wednesday around 3 a.m. on County Road 816. Both men were acting suspicious but told deputies they were coming from a hay field and had been working, Bridges said. He said both men were checked clear and were allowed to leave the scene.
Around 4 a.m., deputies were called out to a criminal trespass on County Road 816 and found the men trying to steal a backhoe, Bridges said. Stell fled the area on foot, while Bryce tried to flee on a tractor, Bridges said. But deputies were able to arrest Bryce.
Bridges said Stell then ran to a home on CR 816 and stole a Ford pickup and drove to the Cushing area to an oil well site on County Road 971, where he got it stuck.
Shortly after 8 a.m., deputies learned Stell was trying to steal another tractor at a home in Cushing. Deputies arrived and arrested him. They learned he was trying to steal it in an effort to pull out the stolen pickup truck, Bridges said.
Investigators were also able to determine the pair had tried to steal another tractor on County Road 816 before stealing the backhoe.
