JOHANNESBURG (RNN) – Two giraffes were being transported on the highways of South Africa on Thursday, and one met its demise.

One of the giraffes hit its head on an overhead bridge in Centurion and died of head trauma, Rick Allan of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals confirmed to NBC. He said the group could potentially seek criminal charges against the driver of the truck following an investigation.

“The way that these giraffes were being transported was incorrect and not up to standards,” Allan said. “Their heads were above the vehicle, which meant that one of them cracked their head on the bridge.”

The companion giraffes were traveling in an open-air truck, their necks high above the top of the truck. They were being transported to a game farm in Warmbarths, 99 miles outside of Johannesburg, according to the BBC.

Travelers along the highway began taking photos of the sight and tweeting them.

South African TV and radio personality Pabi Moloi tweeted, “Look at how low that bridge is and how tall the giraffes are. Who thought this one through? I wish I hadn’t seen this.”

Many people on social media have mentioned the scene from The Hangover Part III, where a giraffe was decapitated in a similar situation.

Many zoos use custom-built trailers to transport giraffes. The Santa Barbara Zoo in California has one such trailer, and zoos around the world have made the specific arrangements when transporting these animals.
