CROCKETT, TX (KTRE) - The trip to nationals for the Houston County Panthers One track team is one year away, but their journey to get there starts now.
The team is sending 6 people for the state track meet this weekend in Bryan, Texas to qualify for the State Games of America next year in Lincoln, Nebraska.
The members will showcase in several events including the 4X100, 100, 200 and 300 meter hurdles.
While winning is the initial goal of the group, so is getting their names out their for potential scholarships to go to college in their futures.
"We're just trying to set a milestone, and make an example. It doesn't matter if you're coming from a small school or big school, if you're fast, and you're an athlete you can go anywhere and get colleges to look at you," said Ricktavious Lomax, a member of the 4X100 meter relay team.
The team is unique in itself that runners have taken the responsibility to fundraise for themselves so they can get their names out there for colleges to pick up.
"The team really belongs to the runners, the youths, because they're the ones that are out there doing the fundraising. They're the ones knocking on doors. They're the ones coming out here, putting in hard work on the track 100 degree weather," said Maurice Washington. "I mean they're determined. They're determination is what will drive them over the top."
The team will leave Friday for the meet and start running on Saturday.
