Lufkin Police officers arrested a 38-year-old man on Friday after he allegedly robbed a man that had gone to a female acquaintance’s house to retrieve a cell phone in mid-July.

James Carl Garrett is still being held in the Angelina County Jail on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery. His bail has been set at $75,000.

According to the arrest affidavit, the complainant told Lufkin Police officers that he picked up a woman at a local bar. He told police that he knew her, but he hadn’t seen her in a long time.

The man told police that they spent part of the night at his hotel room, the affidavit stated. Then they went to the woman’s house on Glenn Street, where he spent some time with her before he left.

Early the next morning, the complainant returned to the woman’s house in search of his missing cell phone, the affidavit stated. He talked to the woman the backyard, and she told him she hadn’t seen his phone.

According to the affidavit, the man told the woman that he was going to look in one other place for his phone and come back to her house if that didn’t work. The woman allegedly told him that was OK.

However, when the complainant returned to the home on Glenn Street and went into the living room, the affidavit stated. When he realized that no one was home, the man turned to leave.

At that point, a man who, who was later identified as Garrett, came up behind him with a “huge blade” in his hand, the affidavit stated. Garrett allegedly wouldn’t let him leave.

When the complainant said he didn’t want any trouble and that he was leaving, Garrett allegedly told him, “No, you’re not.” Garrett then demanded that the man give him everything in his pockets, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit stated that Garrett also took the man’s shoes and told him to take off his shirt. When the complainant told him no, Garrett allegedly hit him in the neck with the blade, causing a cut.

Fearing for his life, the complainant started to fight back and managed to flee, the affidavit stated. Garrett allegedly chased the man down the street before the victim got away from him.

After running to one of the first houses he could get to, the victim called the police.

When the Lufkin Police officers arrived at the house on Glenn Street, they found the complainant’s belongings on the couch. The officers found Garrett hiding in the bathroom, according to the affidavit and positively identified as the suspect.

According to the affidavit, the victim lost several teeth in the attack and was treated at a local emergency room for the cut on his neck.
