Battle of Baton Rouge remembered in wreath-laying tribute

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

The anniversary of the Battle of Baton Rouge is quickly approaching, according to historians.

Participants held a reenactment event and memorial in remembrance of the battle that occurred over 150 years ago. It happened on August 5, 1862 during the Civil War on that land that is now the Historic Magnolia Cemetery.

The cemetery held a free event that included a wreath-laying. A board member for the cemetery says the battle shaped the history of Baton Rouge.

“Well, first off it’s something that happened here locally, and it basically changed the way Baton Rouge grew after that,” said Chairman Chip Landry of the Historic Magnolia Cemetery Board.

The Battle of Baton Rouge was the confederate army’s unsuccessful attempt to reclaim the capitol city from Union forces.
