SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

As the number of confirmed Caddo Parish cases of West Nile virus ticks up, some residents are scrambling to do whatever they can to duck and dodge the deadly disease.

And that plan may be exactly what it takes to make sure your name doesn't appear on the list.

"You can't just get rid of them," said Shreveport resident Johnna Hall. "Even if you get rid of all of the standing water in your yard, they are everywhere."

Hall is doing her best to protect her family from mosquitoes, using bug spray and staying indoors as much as possible. Mosquitoes are known to carry West Nile.

Shreveport couple Stacey Knight and Wesley Pratt beat the bugs using spray and by keeping tiki torches lit while they are in their backyard. They feel an urgency to stay safe ever since the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals announced that someone in Caddo Parish had died as a result of the virus.

"When you think of West Nile, you don't think of here, you think of the tropics or somewhere like that," Pratt said.

So far, at least eight cases of West Nile have been confirmed in Caddo Parish since the start of summer. Just days ago, the DHH announced the latest four cases.

"It is kind of like, 'Wow, really? Over a mosquito? One bite?'" Pratt said.

While Knight and Pratt are taking the West Nile threat very seriously, Mary Steel is taking it in stride.

"I'm 50 years old," she said. "If it hasn't gotten me by now, it ain't going to get me."

Here are a few tips for protecting yourself from the virus:

  • If you drink alcohol, mosquitoes may be more likely to bite you
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants
  • Avoid perfumes and colognes if you're going to be outside for a long time.
