VINTON, LA (KPLC) -

David Smith Jr. said he was just sitting at work and the idea came to him.

"I made a Facebook status basically about the event, and literally, in ten hours, I probably had 29 shares," said Pick a Kid founder, Smith.

One Facebook status from one man created a school supply drive bigger than anyone could imagine.

"The original idea was to help ten to 12 kids, and I'm proud to say we're going to help way more than ten to 12," said Smith.

Around 85 students received backpacks filled with school supplies.

"By David posting that one status, it showed everyone here's where you can start and help," said volunteer, Amy Lebleu.

Now it's a team of volunteers all helping to make this more than just a drive but a back to school bash.

"Because this organization is for this community, why not add some games and some food?" said volunteer, Nicole Walker.

Vinton families could pick out a backpack and then let their children enjoy a day of activities. Volunteers said it's the community that made this all possible.

"With the city of Vinton, we've always known they were giving, but I never imagined it would explode like this," said volunteer, Garet Berry.

"My biggest vision is when these kids will walk into school, at least mentally they think they're ready to be as successful as possible," said Smith.

These volunteers said it's a community helping kids feel confident that first day of school and one Facebook status at a time.
