BURNEY, CA (KRCR/CNN) - More than 3,000 residents of a California mountain town were evacuated as a wildfire raged out of control.

The Elier Fire burned across 26,000 acres Monday near Burney, about 200 miles north of Sacramento.

Wildland fire crews were digging protective barriers and starting spot fires to prevent the flames from reaching the community.

Weather is expected to be a concern Monday, as a red flag warning was put into effect for dry, windy conditions.

The U.S. Forest Service said the fire started last week.
