TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Several studies say there is one thing you can look for in a mate that will lead to a long happy relationship. Yes, this one thing can make the person who could become your significant other more empathetic and understanding to your point of view.

There are rows of books on the topic, and there are studies out there that show reading can be the one thing that can make for a better relationship. But a York University and a University of Toronto study state aren't talking about better marriage books, they're talking about fiction.

Elisabeth Harper is in a relationship, and she and her husband read fiction.

“I can see how people that read fiction can put themselves in other situations and the situations of the character they're reading about, and I think nowadays people use that as kind of an escape to experience different situations in life. So I could see how that could contribute to your relationship,” Harper said.

Suzanne Spillers is married, a reader of fiction married and agrees.

“You know they have a bigger imagination, and a more vivid understanding of how people interact,” Spillers observed.

Blake Beavers has a different opinion.

“Hearing true stories about others and how they've conquered things and how things have really happened would be good. Getting wise council is always good. Reading fiction? I don't know, that sounds like watching soap operas to me,” Beavers stated.

Dr. Wade E. French is a licensed professional councilor who has dealt with marriage problems of readers and non-readers alike.

“Anything that adds to your knowledge base certainly is helpful, but I don't know that you can really say that a person that is well-rounded in their reading that that would help them with their relationships. There are just too many variables,” Dr. French said, “and it could be helpful also maybe to make people aware of all the different kind of things that are going to come up. And the longer you live the more that come up.”

“I both agree and disagree. I think it can be helpful but to be able to say that this actually predicts, I don't think you can,” French added.

So the definitive answer is a lot of reading couldn't hurt, but it can't get you ready for everything.

Dr. French says couples tell him during their courtships they would talk about what they agreed upon, and after marriage the things that they disagree about begin to manifest.
