(CNN) – U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst has revealed she was sexually harassed while serving in the military.

Ernst, an Iowa Republican, told several news outlets that experience has fueled her goat to overhaul how sexual assault cases are handled in the armed forces.

The Iraq veteran told Time magazine she was able to stop the unwanted advances by simply telling the person involved to stop – but for others it isn't always that simple.

She says if elected she plans to help champion a democratic proposal to remove commanders from decided whether subordinates should be prosecuted for sexual harassment.

Ernst is in a tight race with Democratic Congressman Bruce Braley.
