The Lumberjacks are about to put some wear and tear on the turf for their first live scrimmage of the season.
It will be a purple vs. white scrimmage at Homer Bryce Stadium.
First-year head coach Clint Conque said they are going to make the scrimmage as game realistic as possible.
The ‘Jacks will be hiring referees from the Southland Conference to officiate the scrimmage, they will be experimenting with their instant replay and announcing as a complete test run of what to expect for the season.
Coaches will see which players will step up, and earn a spot on the field.
“I think you always should create a competitive environment and let the players know there's always opportunity for upward mobility,” said Conque.
While players are earning starting positions, the coaches are also hoping to grow depth in their rosters to be ready to handle what a typical season can throw your way.
“We better be pretty good at every position with two deep to go through our non-conference schedule and certainly be able to compete in our conference,” said Conque. “We're a work in progress. We got some young men that are out, that are frontline players, so this is a real opportunity for some of those backups to really be able to step up and show us what they can do in game type conditions.”
The scrimmage is set to start at 4 p.m. Saturday.Copyright 2014 KTRE. All rights reserved.
