Forest Festival season kicks off in Lufkin

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - East Texans are just 30 days from one of the premier festivals in Texas.

The 30th annual Texas State Forest Festival will officially start on Sept. 17 and run through Sept. 21.

The annual event attracts people from all over the state and is an economic boost to Angelina County.

The festival was ranked "Best in Texas" in both their attendance and income category by the Texas Festival and Events Association.

This year's event returns with crowd favorites such as the cheer competition and the Southern Hushpuppy Championships as well as some new attractions.

"One of [the new ones] is a women's lumberjack show," said Angelina County Chamber of Commere CEO Jerry Huffman. "We have several women who are world champion lumberjacks, or lumberjills, that are coming to be part of the show. We think that is going to be very exciting that people would like to see. We have a tiger show that is coming that is awesome, and people are going to get to see some awesome animals."

KTRE will be hosting their annual canned food drive on the first night of the event.
