NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

A 19-year-old man was shot and killed in New Britain late Monday night, according to police.

Several officers had blocked off Roberts Street just off South Main Street just before 11 p.m. They said they received multiple calls about possible gunfire in the area of 62 Roberts St.

Callers also said that a person was lying in the street.

When police arrived, they said they found a male victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was later identified as a New Britain resident, but his name was withheld until his family could be notified.

Police said they were on their hands and knees searching for shell casings while up on the porch of an abandoned multifamily home.

Across the street, neighbors took it all in and said they were on edge.

Eddie Carter said he was watching TV last night when he heard a shot rang out.

"I heard a big boom outside, said 'oh that's fireworks,'" Carter said. "Went to the window, opened the curtain and said 'mom, somebody's laying down on the ground. [I] ran outside and called 911.'"

The victim was rushed to a local hospital, but didn't make it.

"I found out he died, I was like heartbroken. I knew the kid," Carter said. "He lived on the street. He was cool."

Folks who live in the area said the victim was coming home from a friend's house. He went down Roberts Street and that's when the friend heard the gun shot.

"We were all stunned," said Sherri Rose of New Britain. "My friend was just with him and when he came back and told us, I didn't know what to think at first."

Rose said she was shocked by the violence.

"I asked him what he thought happened," she said. "He thought he had a problem with somebody? Lord only knows, but I feel awful for the family because he was only 19. It's sad."

Police have not released any information on possible suspects.

They continue to investigate.
