Victims identified in Corrigan wreck that killed 1 and injured another

CORRIGAN, TX (KTRE) - The names of the victims involved in a fatal accident off HWY 59 on Thursday afternoon have been identified. 

The deceased victim is identified as Marco A. Chairez-Lopez, 22, of Lufkin. Lopez was sitting in the passengers seat at the time of the accident. He was pronounced dead on scene. Lopez was transported to Corrigan Funeral Home. 

The driver of the van has been identified as Jakob Sprinkle, 19, of Lufkin. Sprinkle was air lifted to Memorial Herman in Houston. He is expected to be released with only minor injuries. 

According to Corrigan Police Officer Harold Rapsilver, both men were in a van owned by Sound Techs, a business in Lufkin, when they crashed into the back of an 18-wheeler on US 59 in Corrigan.

Rapsilver said the 18-wheeler had stopped because it was preparing to turn into a business.

It is not yet known if either driver will receive a citation, that will be determined after an investigation by the Corrigan Police Department.

    More than a few tar-covered tires are hanging on to the parking lot of a Lufkin tire shop.  On August 31, newly laid asphalt on Loop 287 started sticking to tires of those driving, leaving many of the cars un-driveable. As of Friday, the Texas Department of Transportation hadn't come out with an official cause for the incident, but that hasn't stopped over 600 people from filing claims with them.
