GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -

Luke Air Force Base has grounded 38 of its 42 F-16D fighter jets after structural cracks were found, Major Matt Hasson said.

The U.S. Air Force ordered an inspection of all F-16D Fighting Falcon jets at the end of July after it began finding cracks between the front and rear pilot seats on the planes during routine post-flight inspections.

Hasson said the Air Force and Lockheed Martin are working together to fix the cracks. The planes will return to the air when they have been deemed safe to fly, he said.

The Air Force has 157 of the F-16D aircraft. Luke trains 95 percent of all F-16 pilots, Hasson noted.

He said the grounding does not affect the F-35. In fact, Luke got its seventh F-35 on Wednesday.
