TEMPE, AZ (CBS5) -

Dozens of additional officers are on patrol this weekend to help ensure returning students at Arizona State University don't drink too much as they kick off the new semester.

The "Safe and Sober" campaign is in full force around the ASU campus and in Tempe, and 15 different agencies will work together on patrols through Sept. 6.

"It's not just about arresting DUI's and underage drinkers, but it's about creating a safer environment for the students to be able to return to school," Michael Thompson of the ASU Police Department said.

The Tempe Police Department has also increased the number of officers at and near Tempe schools.

"As public safety professionals and as a community, our highest responsibility is to assure we are doing everything we can to keep children, young people and all members of the community safe," Tempe Police Chief Tom Ryff said.

The annual campaign includes partners from Tempe's Neighborhood Office, Fire Medical Rescue Department, Community Services, Arizona State University, Tempe police and local social service agencies, such as Tempe Coalition, working together to reduce underage drinking and drug use to keep people safe and stem related crime.
