PRESCOTT, AZ (CBS5) -

Five students at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University were rescued from the top of Granite Mountain in Yavapai County early Friday morning.

The students started climbing the face of the mountain about 4 p.m. without using a trail in late afternoon, and by the time they reached the summit, it was dusk, Conrad Jackson of the Prescott Fire Department said.

They tried to come down the mountain using lights from their cell phones, but one of the hikers became weak, dehydrated and unable to make the descent back to Granite Basin Lake. None of the students carried food, water or warm clothing, Jackson said.

They called 911 about midnight, Jackson said, and crews from the Central Yavapai and Prescott fire departments and Yavapai County Backcountry Search and Rescue team went to the site, Jackson said.

Prescott Fire Capt. Ryan Murphy boarded a helicopter to find a possible extraction site. No site was found, but the hikers were found and the helicopter was used to find a hiking route for the rescue team, Jackson said.

He said a team from the Prescott Fire Department hiked five miles to get the to the students. They brought them food and water and the students were able to hike down on their own power about 5 a.m. Friday, Jackson said.
