LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - There was purple for as far as you could see at the Lufkin Civic Center Friday. All of the Lufkin ISD staff joined together to kick off the new school year. The program was all about getting everyone motivated to educate.
Plus superintendent Dr. LaTonya Goffney made a big splash
"It was all about coming together and preparing for our students," Goffney said.
Student and school leaders were invited to the podium to inspire their peers and illustrate how to be a child's best hope, best chance and best educator.
"Education made a huge difference for me and it's the best chance, best hope, best opportunity for a lot of kids and so if it's not for education they turn to a life of poverty and just doing things that we don't want them to engage in," Goffney said.
Thursday night the LISD school board approved employee pay raises and Dr. Goffney said it's a big deal.
"I have always said that we want the kids to be the best prepared but we also want our teachers and our staff to be the best paid," Goffney said. "The main thing is teaching and learning. We want our kids to learn and in order for them to learn they must have the best teachers. I know there are teachers that choose to stay here and it's not because of the money but we want to backup our words with our actions and if we say teaching and learning is the most important thing then our teachers should be compensated adequately."
Goffney also took advantage of the captive audience to accept a challenge. The ice bucket challenge. She accepted the challenge, challenged all the LISD campus principals and department directors then waited for the splash.
