LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin woman says she was scammed out of hundreds of dollars after a caller told her she had won more than a million dollars in a Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes.
According to the Lufkin Police Department, the woman said she received a call from a man claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House. She said he told her she had won $2.3 million and a Mercedesz Benz, but he said she could not claim her prize until she sent a $500 pre-paid card to pay for the taxes.
The woman said she sent the $500 and received another call saying that they need another $500 to pay for more taxes.
It was at that point that she realized she had been scammed.
LPD said they have sent the case to criminal investigations.
