NACOGDOCHES COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - Hundreds of pairs of shoes and school supplies were distributed to kids in Nacogdoches Sunday afternoon. Over 400 kids packed the International Church of Nacogdoches, with smiles on their faces.
11- year-old Zyshon Gilyard has been receiving shoes from the Glory Gang Ministries for the last three years. He said each year his favorite part of the event is picking out his new shoes.
"I am happy to be here," Gilyard said. "I am thankful that I get new shoes for free."
One by one the kid's feet were soaked in water and then rinse with soap.
Volunteer Caroline Alder said there is a special meaning behind the whole process.
"Jesus washed his disciple's feet and so he tells them to do it to others too and it's a sign of saying that we love them," Alder said.
Organizer Richard Konderla said this event originally started off as a back to school supply drive about 10 years ago.It wasn't until their fifth year that they decided to add shoes to the supply list.
"They will say Pastor Richard look at my new shoes, or look how fast I can run with my new shoes and then some of the kids will not wear their shoes. Konderla said. "They will put them in a plastic bag because they don't want to get them dirty."
He said it's an experience that truly touches the heart of everyone involved. The shoes were provided by the Samaritan Feet organization.
