Students Attend Forum in Observance of World AIDS Day

by Ramonica R. Jones

In observance of World AIDS Day, a group of East Texas students got an up close and personal look at the face of AIDS and HIV. They heard from people affected by the epidemic and how it's permanently changed their lives.

Angela Reynolds has been HIV positive for nine years. The forum was her first time speaking out publicly about her battle with the virus. She hopes students will remember her message about protecting themselves and knowing their HIV status long after World AIDS Day is over.

"Before I found out, I was pretty ignorant," Angela says. "I'd seen the commercials, the advertisements, but I didn't pay a lot of attention."

Nearly 50,000 people in Texas have HIV or AIDS. About 80 of those patients live in Angelina County.
