DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Saturday, Aug 30, out on the Tennessee River there were only a few boaters out enjoying the official end of summer. Marine Patrol Officer Larry Adams said it had been a calm summer.

“There have been a lot of family oriented boaters out,” Adams said. “Five years ago it was wild and crazy out here. Boating comes and goes in trends.”

While out on patrol, Adams said he looks for people boating recklessly and boating while intoxicated.

“It's just the same as driving,” Adams said. “If you're going to be drinking out here, you need to have a designated driver.”

Adams also conducted random safety checks on boats to try and prevent problems on the water.

“90 percent of all accidents are the result of human error,” Adams said. “A lot of mistakes are made out here on the water can be prevented with just a little bit of prior planning."

Under Alabama state law, every person operating a boat must have a boating license and registration. All boats also have to be equipped with a horn and enough life jackets for everyone on board.
