Two pedestrians die following crash in Opelika

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) -

The Opelika Police Department says they are investigating a crash after two pedestrians were killed after being struck by a vehicle.

According to officials, the crash happened at the 1000 block of Columbus Parkway around 10:30 p.m. When emergency crews arrived they located one male and one female in the roadway who had been struck by a passing vehicle, a white Toyota Camry, traveling west bound.

The female pedestrian was transported by air to the Midtown Medical Center in Columbus. Around 2:55 a.m. she was pronounced dead from the injuries she sustained in the crash.

The male pedestrian was transported by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center and later flown by helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital. Around 4:55 a.m. he was pronounced dead from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

Two witnesses from the scene stated that the two pedestrians were attempting to cross Columbus Parkway from the parking lot of Durango's Mexican Restaurant when they were struck by the vehicle.

This case is under investigation by members of the Opelika Police Department's Traffic Homicide Investigation team as well as the Lee County Coroner's Office.
