HARTSELLE, AL (WAFF) -

Sunday marked exactly 31 months since the Hartselle community lost their only hospital. The mayor is trying to find a way to get emergency room service in town, but it has been an uphill climb.

Hartselle has not had any 24-hour emergency facilities since Hartselle Medical Center closed in January 2012. Residents may have have to travel anywhere from 20 minutes to a half-hour to get to an ER in Cullman or Decatur, and Mayor Don Hall said that's just too far to have to go for emergency medical care.

Huntsville Hospital now owns the building. Hall said he has talked with Huntsville Hospital about opening a floor of the Hartselle facility. The mayor said he asked if they could open a 24-7 emergency room there. But he said he has been told by Huntsville Hospital officials that it's not viable to bring in licensed er doctors to keep it staffed around the clock.

Hall is looking into how state officials have licensed a emergency room facility in Birmingham. He believes Hartselle especially needs a facility to provide geriatric medical services. The Falkville Medical Clinic is closer, but Hall wants an ER that is open all hours, every day

Hall said he doesn't yet know what the next step is, but that he is determined to find a way to have an emergency room in Hartselle.
