Lufkin DPS on the search for driver who escaped during high speed chase

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Around 10:39 p.m. Saturday, Lufkin DPS attempted to stop a 2004 Pontiac passenger car off of Jim Stephens Road, for a traffic violations. According to DPS, the driver initially stopped but then soon took off leading DPS on a high speed chase.

In an effort to evade authorities the driver turned left on to FM 2497. The car chase finally came to a halt when the driver drove off the roadway, striking a tree at Burkhalter Hollow Rd.

However, the chase didn't stop there. The driver then managed to escape from the vehicle just second before it caught on fire and began evading authorities on foot.

Diboll Police assisted DPS in their search but they were unable to locate the driver. The driver is described as a white male approximately 5'7, stocky build, mid 20's with short dark hair thinning on the top.
