Supervisor Stokes wants to propose wage increase for county employees

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Hinds County supervisor wants county employees to get paid more through a proposed minimum wage increase.

District 5 Supervisor Kenneth Stokes says several earning minimum wage cannot make ends meet because of rising gas, electricity and water bills.

He says there's enough money in the budget at the end of this budget period that the supervisors can spend to raise the minimum wage to $10.10.

The budget period ends Sept. 30.

"Some working two or three jobs some cannot even spend time with their families it's hard to raise their children because their trying to make it then you have others because of the low salary force them into a life of crime," Stokes said.

Stokes plans to introduce the idea during Tuesday's board of supervisors meeting.
