After an impressive performance by the Lufkin Panthers Friday night against the Longview Lobos, the Panthers have since clinched the No. 5 spot in the Associated Press Texas high school football poll.
The Panthers entered the season ranked 14th in the AP Poll, but after their dominate 44-14 win over Longview, Lufkin jumped 9 rankings and cracked into the Top 10.
Longview's ranking dropped drastically as they held the No. 3 ranking before playing the Panthers. After their loss, the Lobos now find themselves outside the Top 10 ranked at No. 11.
The only teams ranked in the Top 10 for Class 5A that are in Lufkin's district are Ennis and John Tyler.
John Tyler's season opened with a 30-12 win over Plano and now the Lions have claimed the No. 2 ranking.
Ennis dropped 6 rankings in the AP Poll when they lost 34-21 to Mansfield Timberview. Ennis now sits right behind the Panthers in the No. 8 spot.
The Panthers will have another chance to improve their AP ranking when they play Tyler Lee this Friday night at Abe Martin Stadium in Lufkin. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
