WELLS, TX (KTRE) - Road workers have found a decomposed body in the median of US 69, just north of Wells, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Capt. John Raffield said the body is that of a white woman. He said a crew was mowing the median when the came across the body. They do not have an idea of the woman's age.
Raffield said the area was last mowed in June.
Investigators from Angelina County were called to the scene to see if the body is that of a missing woman reported there. Sheila Morton, 32, was reported missing on June 2, the last time that area was mowed, according to Cherokee County Sheriff James Campbell. Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches said they will do DNA testing to see if it is her.
"We did find a shoe and a hat a short distance from the body. We don't know if the person was hit by an automobile or if the person just died and maybe an animal or something moved the hat or shoe. We don't know," Campbell said. "We have some Angelina County officers down here as well to see if they might have a missing person. We don't have a missing person that matches this description in Cherokee County."
The body was sent to Tyler for an autopsy.
