The SFA football season has already started, but Lumberjack fans can get excited about their home opener Saturday.
The ‘Jacks will be stepping on Homer Bryce Stadium for the first time this season against Incarnate Word. It's also the first time the two have ever faced off.
The Cardinals are in the Southland Conference now, but are making the transition from Division II to Division I, therefore this is considered a non-conference game.
The ‘Jacks are coming off a week where they fell short to the 20th ranked Kansas State Wildcats 55-16. Although it was a tough loss, SFA said they are able to bring home some positive things that they are hoping to show off in front of fans.
“I'm very proud how we competed last week. We did some really good things for the first half, we really went toe-to-toe with them, and there were a lot of positive things throughout the game,” said head coach Clint Conque. “Now playing at home, hopefully there's a big crowd, and a lot of fans cheering to really encourage these young men to perform at a higher level.”
The players say the word about the home opener has spread like rapid fire across the campus.
“The buzz around school right now is there's going to be a lot of people there and I just can't wait to come out chopping the wood, and hear everybody scream and yell,” said senior running back Gus Johnson. “It's exciting. I'm going to love it.”
“We're going to have to come out and just play,” said senior wide receiver Tyler Boyd. “We need to stay calm. We know what to do. We just got to execute our plays and we'll be fine.”
Game is set to kick off at 6 p.m. Saturday night at Homer Bryce Stadium.
