Woman Encourages You To Send Packages To Soldiers

by Donna McCollum

Ruth Ann Peterson knows what soldiers like. She sifts through boxes of care packages that will be mailed to Iraq. "We've got a lot of CDs. Of course, they love magazines, and we have the soup."

She sends them not only what they need, but what they want. "They wanted the magazine Rolling Stone, the normal razor blades, and noodles. They want pistachios."

When the wish lists are filled, they're most always followed by a thank you. "I receive both e-mail and letters and now phone calls from Iraq, and it just blesses you. We all get so excited, and it's one of the biggest highs you can have when you hear from one of the soldiers."

One soldier even refers to Peterson as "Mom". Others send pictures. "It's really positive things. They go, 'Quit worrying about me.'"

Commercial Bank of Texas employees are collecting care packages. Monetary donations are placed in a War Postage account.

Also, Christmas cards are encouraged. The address is simple said Peterson. "All you have to do is write, 'Merry Christmas, Defender of Freedom.' I like that. That will be on my cards," said a satisfied Peterson.
