LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - The announcement of new Apple products had East Texans excited.
Tuesday morning, Apple executives announced that a new version of the iPhone would be hitting store soon. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch screen while the Plus gets bigger with a 5.5-inch screen.
The phones also feature new graphics technology as well as a WiFi calling system and the Apple pay system. The Apple pay system allows for users to store credit/ debit card information on their phone and swipe the phone at a sensor to pay at stores.
The Apple Watch has been rumored for years and will be able to help people track their fitness workouts. East Texans are hoping the watch will compete with other smartphone watches already on the market.
"It has some unique designs," Anthony Edwards said. "The only difference that I see is that they have a scroll wheel."
For Screen Geeks owner Matt Davis, the announcement seemed a little overrated.
"I feel like a lot of the features that Apple was releasing are already on some of the Android phones and have been for some time now," Davis said. "I do feel like they are playing a little bit of catch up."
Davis said that at least 60 percent of his customers have Apple products and said he believes the new line will bring more customers.
"I think the appeal of Apple for many people is the ease of use," Davis said. "You can pick up an iPhone and without too much use learn how to use it."
Davis said it will be interesting to see if the new designs will work for the consumers.
"I just wonder if it is too late for apple because a lot of people have already switched," Davis said. "I know a lot of people who say, 'I love, love my iPhone, but I couldn't deal with the smaller screen', because they would get jealous that people had 5.5-inch inch screens, so I wonder if it might draw people back in."
According to the Apple website, the new phones will be available for pre-order on Sept. 12. The iPhone 6 Plus will start at $299 for 16 GB. The Plus will also be available with 64 GB at $399 and 128 GB for $499. The Apple Watch starts at $399 and is being advertised as hitting the market in early 2015.
