Several Fatal Accidents Create A Deadly East Texas Saturday

by Chris Cato

It was a deadly Saturday for East Texas after two fatal accidents. In Nacogdoches Saturday morning, 59-year-old Eugene Berry of Nacogdoches was eastbound on Gasaway St. when, for an unknown reason, police say he veered off the road and then struck a tree.

Officials say he died at the scene. The impact with the tree was so severe it knocked the dashboard inches from the seat where Berry was sitting. Officials believe he may have suffered a heat attack prior to the accident.

Another accident claimed the life of a person early Saturday morning in the city of Pineland. According to Police Chief Jamie Brazer, a southbound diesel truck pulling a flatbed on Highway 96 was making a u-turn to head back north. That's when a northbound pickup struck the trailer.

The driver of the pickup later died at a local hospital. The identity of that pickup driver has not yet been released. The driver of the tractor trailer, Denis Lane of Pineland, was not injured. Chief Brazer says that no citations will be issued at this time.
