There's a new baby at Lufkin's Ellen Trout Zoo.
Officials with the Ellen Trout Zoo announced the birth of a tiny bay duiker calf on the zoo's Facebook page Wednesday.
The baby duiker was born on Sunday, and it weighed less than three pounds at birth. According to the zoo's status update, it is one of several duikers born at the Ellen Trout Zoo.
"The Ellen Trout Zoo is working with another AZA accredited zoo and a private holder to manage the small North American population," the status update stated. "This birth brings the small population up to 19 animals."
The update said the calf is the duiker pair's first baby and that they're "doing great as new parents."
The calf received a check up from the zoo's staff veterinarian, and the family is being closely monitored by zoo keepers.
Currently, the bay duiker family is being kept in seclusion off-exhibit. However, the Ellen Trout Zoo's other bay duikers may be seen near the hippoquarium.
The Ellen Trout Zoo is located at 402 Zoo Circle in Lufkin, just off of north Loop 287. It is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., including holidays and weekends. The cost of admission is $5 for adults, and $2.50 for children ages 4-11. Children under the age of 4 get in free.
