LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - All three races in the upcoming "Race for Success," hosted by Junior Achievement of Angelina County are now certified by the USA Track and Field Association.

Melinda Sullivan, a board member for the organization, said she spent weeks mapping the 5K, the 10K, and half-marathon races in order to get them certified.

"There's a 5K race, a 10K race, and a half-marathon and we have certified all three of them with the USA Track and Field Association and the certification's--what you do is you to take technical tools and you ride the race course to certify that they are the length that we are advertising," Sullivan said.

A member of the USATF in Houston was able to certify the courses just in time for preregistration, Sullivan said.

"It's a neat thing for runners because sometimes you go into races, and the races are a little bit short, and you feel great about the race and then you find out that it is just a little bit short, and you can't really compare that to other races," Sullivan said. "With the certification this allows the runners to understand that this is indeed the length that they are walking or running."

The race is the only race in Angelina County that is USATF-certified, Sullivan said.

If interested in participating in the race, which will be at Slack Elementary on Nov. 1, visit http://www.jaangelinacounty.org/race-for-success.html.
