According to a press release, Selman stopped a 2000 Chevrolet pickup driven by Burton on Christopher Road off of Highway 103 West for a traffic violation. Allen was the passenger in the pickup.

Burton was initially placed under arrest because he had allegedly been driving with a suspended license. After a wrecker was called in to tow Burton's vehicle, Selman and Sgt. Travis Strickland of the Lufkin Police Department did an inventory of the truck's contents.

The law enforcement officers found a plastic bag filled with 169 grams of a substance that was field-tested to be methamphetamine in the pickup's center console, the press release stated.

A Smith and Wesson .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol was found on the floorboard on Allen's side of the pickup. According to the press release, the pistol had been reported stolen and entered into the TCIC database by the Rusk County Sheriff's Office.

In addition, Burton allegedly had more than $2,600 in cash in his pocket. The press release stated that Allen had $2,100 in cash hidden in her bra.
