ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A man was taken to a Lufkin hospital following an accident involving a motorcyclist and a car on US 59 north of Lufkin Friday.
The wreck occurred near the Winston Ranch at approximately 3 p.m. Friday.
According to an official with the Lufkin Fire Department, 18-year-old Katheryn Martin was traveling north in the left hand on US 59 in a 2012 Kia Forte. She slammed on her brakes when she encountered slower-moving traffic and veered into the right lane.
The Lufkin Fire Department official said Martin didn't realize that there was a motorcyclist in the right lane, and she clipped him with her mirror. The man was knocked off his motorcycle.
"I hope he's OK," Martin said. "I don't want to hurt anybody."
Visibly upset, Martin said she had just gotten her car last Christmas. It was a graduation present.
The LFD official did not release the motorcyclist's name. The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, was complaining of shoulder pains and was taken to the Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin.
Traffic was moving slowly because it had been narrowed down to one lane, but emergency personnel expect to have the wreck cleared in a short amount of time.
