Angel Tree Drive Needs Your Help

by Jessica Cervantez

Some children in Angelina County may not have a very bright Christmas, but there are ways you can help. This year, at least 2,000 area children are a part of the Salvation Army's Angel Tree.

Although this may be the time of giving, many teenagers have a hard time getting adopted. Dakota, Nicholas, and Esmeralda are all angels. They're waiting to be adopted from the Angel Tree.

Not only does the McClellan family help adopt children, Hope also volunteers with the drive. The family found a one-year-old little girl, just like her granddaughter, Ally.

McClellan said, "I can tell you there's so much need there. Last year, when we were giving gifts out, this little boy was here and he asked for a horse, and we scrounged around looking for it. And the look on his face when we found one! And we've had parents cry because the child needed something and they got it."

The little ones are snagged quickly. Lots of older kids are still left, hoping someone will help brighten their holiday season.

Capt. Lola Maldonado, with the Salvation Army, said, "Teenagers 13 and up don't get adopted, and I think I understand why. I think it's so hard to try to get the right sizes."

One solution is buying a gift certificate, so the kids can pick their own gifts.

As children are getting adopted, the Salvation Army continues to receive more and more applications for the Angel Tree program, meaning there is still a big need for donations.

Maldonado said, "I just have to believe that God is going to provide. Well, they say 'Miss Captain, we're still getting calls.' Let's have faith! The community has always been very giving, they come-forth-and-provide."

McClellan said, "Be thankful for what you have and show it by sharing it with others." Through that sharing, you can help more kids like Ally have a Merry Christmas.

You can visit the Salvation Army on Third Street in downtown Lufkin to adopt an Angel. Participating stores include Belk in Lufkin, Johnson's Furniture in Nacogdoches, Woodland Heights and Memorial hospitals in Lufkin, the Lufkin Mall, and Chick-Fil-A.
