SAN JACINTO COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - One person is dead and another in critical condition after a plane crashed in San Jacinto County.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson Stephanie Davis, the accident happened around 4:30 Saturday afternoon just east of Shepherd near FM 223.
“It was a self-made plane, and I don't know exactly where they were coming from,” said Davis.
Eyewitnesses say the plane was going in for a landing and ran over the runway, hitting a tree.
The pilot of the plane, 44-year-old Marcus Schmitt, of Shepherd, was pronounced dead on the scene. The passenger, 35-year-old Rene Weatherford, from Houston, was air lifted to Memorial Hermann in Houston for his injuries, including broken legs. He is currently listed in critical condition.
The investigation has now been turned over the National Transportation Safety Board.
