BEAUMONT, TX (News Release) - A 25-year-old Ennis man pleaded guilty to federal felony charges for using mobile apps to set up sexual encounters with a 13-year-old Tyler County girl.
Crockett Jacob Roddam pleaded guilty to federal charges of coercion and enticement Tuesday. He will be sentenced at a later date.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim's older sister contacted Tyler County authorities and said she woke up at 4:30 a.m. on May 5 and saw her sister's cellphone and determined she had been communicating through Kik Messenger with someone who was apparently traveling to meet the girl so they could have sex. The messages provided locations during travel, which included Jasper, Dam B, Spurger, and Fred.
In subsequent interviews, the victim said she became acquainted with a man she knew only as "Jacob" in October 2013. She said he contacted her through Kik and she told him she was 13.
The affidavit states the two had sex on two occasions between December and May.
The girl said the two made arrangements on the weekend of May 3 for her to sneak out of her house and meet him. She said after they met, Roddam drove her home and her mother and sister were awake and looking for her and had called a deputy to their house.
The girl told them she did not know Roddam's last name, address or phone number, but believed him to be over 18 and employed as a pipeliner.
The affidavit states how authorities subpoenaed records from Kik and determined through that and other social media that Roddam was the suspect. They also used a SANE exam as evidence.
The affidavit states that Roddam also tried to set up a sexual encounter with the girl's 13-year-old friend and even offered both girls $300 each to have sex with him. However, the friend did not meet with him.
The affidavit states Roddam called the friend's mother's phone during the early morning hours of May 5 and told her that the victim's sister had "called the cops." He told her he wanted to have sex with her before he "went to jail" and asked her to sneak out of her house to meet him.
Federal authorities have filed a motion for detention for Roddam. A future court date has not been set.
