ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A Zavalla boy is recovering in a Houston hospital after suffering an indirect lightning hit Sunday evening.
Timfany Garcia said her cousin, Nicholas Mitchell, 14, has double pneumonia with fluid on his lungs following the Sunday incident. She said he was weaned off a ventilator on Monday.
Garcia said her Mitchell and another boy were in the national forest off of State Highway 147 and Mitchell had climbed in a metal deer stand which was leaned against a tree, around 5 p.m. She said the lightning struck the tree and it blew him out of the stand, knocking him unconscious.
Garcia said the friend also felt a jolt from the lightning but was able to recover and ran for help.
Garcia said the friend had a hard time re-tracing his steps and it took until 7 p.m. for responders to reach Mitchell.
On Sunday, Sanches said it initially appeared the boys were hunting illegally. Garcia said they were only scouting sites to hunt. Sanches said no gun was found at the scene.
