ANGELINA COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - A new scam is making the rounds, according to Angelina County Sheriff Greg Sanches.
Sanches said people have been calling Angelina County residents and telling them that because they didn't show for their grand jury assignments, they're going to be fined.
Once the hook is set, the callers are telling people to go to a dollar store to buy a $500 gift card, Sanches said. He said they then ask the potential scam victims to give them the number from the card.
The potential scam victims are then told to meet the caller at the Angelina County Courthouse, so they can pay the fines with the gift cards.
"All the crooks need is that number, and they use that money," Sanches said. "Then they never show up at the courthouse."
