LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A local self-defense instructor is offering a free class to teach other women how to protect themselves.
Gabriella Roberts said she will be teaching the class in hopes that she can prevent just one woman from being hurt. She said so often women come to her to learn how to defend themselves after they were attacked.
It's a very basic class that will provide women with the fundamentals of self defense.
"What I am wanting to do is to teach women how to protect their assets, so I want them to come out on the mat with me. It's a real easy, practical, basic technique is what they're going to be learning," Roberts said. "It's about the element of surprise, so we're going to talk about how to deal with it, how to calmly breathe through a situation, and how to control it if you're not in control.
The class is Tuesday night from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. It's at the Lufkin Parks & Recreation building on the corner of First and Frank Street, and again, it's completely free.
Organizers are asking participants to bring a toy to the class, so they can donate them to the Family Crisis Center of East Texas.
