LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A two-vehicle accident on 69 at FM 843 had four lanes of traffic shut down on Wednesday night.

Trooper Michael Tomason said a 1990s Ford F150 pickup truck was attempting to turn onto Hwy 69 from FM 843, and pulled into the path of an 18-wheeler. The 18-wheeler was unable to avoid hitting the pickup truck, officials say.

Because of how widespread the accident debris was, all four lanes at this intersection were shut down. 50-year-old Billy Ray Murphy, the driver of the pickup truck, was taken by ambulance to a Lufkin hospital. DPS Dispatch confirmed Murphy was flown to ETMC in Tyler.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was identified as Marcus Bares, 40, from San Augustine.

Barnes said he normally hauls crude oil, but his tanker was empty at the time.

"I was heading north on the highway and I saw some bright lights from the side road," Barnes said. "I tried to avoid him, but it was too late. It could have been a lot worse. it could have flipped over, spills and everything else. No one was coming from the other direction, so that's a good thing."
