Lufkin man released from hospital after Wed. night wreck on Hwy 69

LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) - A Lufkin man has been released from ETMC in Tyler after his truck was hit by an 18-wheeler on Highway 69 in Pollok Wednesday night.

Billy Ray Murphy, 50 of Lufkin, was flown by helicopter to the Tyler hospital after complaining of neck injuries. Paramedics on scene also believed Murphy could have suffered internal injuries.

Trooper Michael Thomason said Murphy was driving a1990s Ford F150 pickup truck and attempted to turn onto Hwy 69 from FM 843. Thomason said Murphy pulled into the path of an 18-wheeler. Thomason said the collision caused Murphy's truck to spin several times, and the 18-wheeler stopped after hitting a church sign next to the southbound lanes.

Because of how widespread the accident debris was, all four lanes at the intersection were shut down.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was identified as Marcus Bares, 40, from San Augustine.

Barnes said he normally hauls crude oil, but his tanker was empty at the time.

"I was heading north on the highway, and I saw some bright lights from the side road," Barnes said. "I tried to avoid him, but it was too late. It could have been a lot worse. it could have flipped over, spills and everything else. No one was coming from the other direction, so that's a good thing."
