New and Improved Movie Theaters Coming Soon

Moviegoers will soon have two new theatres from which to choose. The Lufkin Mall's Carmike Cinemas re-opened four new screens Friday. Five additional screens are also being added, and construction on that project is expected to be completed in May.

The new makeover includes an improved concession area, and each of the existing screens has been remodeled. Managers say it should make for a better moviegoing experience.

"Stadium seating, new seats, new drapes, new digital sound -- we wanted to get that open right away," says Saul Garcia, district manager of Carmike Cinemas. "We were already closed three-and-a-half months. The new five theaters are scheduled to be open on May 7th."

Carmike will soon have some new competition. Starplex Cinemas 12, based in Dallas, will soon begin construction next to Lufkin's Home Depot. Lufkin's rapid growth and development is what attracted Starplex Cinemas to the area.

Both theaters will show first-run movies by either sharing them or taking turns.
