NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

Despite the fact that her father was in the Intensive Care Unit at Nacogdoches Medical Center, his daughter was determined that she wasn't going to let his medical condition prevent him from giving her away in marriage.

The day before her actual marriage ceremony was scheduled, Chelsea Cooper arranged for a justice of the peace to come to the hospital to marry her and her fiancée in her father's room.

Nacogdoches Medical Center's staff posted the details about the impromptu marriage on the hospital's Facebook page. The status update already has 3,159 likes and 439 shares.

“While no one ever wants to be in the hospital, the thought of missing your daughter's wedding makes it almost unbearable,” the hospital's status update stated. “Jerry Hammers was admitted to the ICU a couple of weeks ago and learned that he would be unable to attend his daughter's wedding.”

However, after Chelsea arranged for the justice of the peace to perform the ceremony, she called ahead to let the ICU's staff know of her plans and requested that they keep the whole thing a surprise.

“She wanted to surprise her dad by bringing her wedding to him,” the status update stated. “When Medical Center's ICU staff got word of the plan, they instant took action.”

According to the Facebook status update, the ICU's staff rallied to make over one of the ICU rooms in time for the wedding. Within 30 minutes, employees from all over the hospital worked together to decorate an empty ICU room with linens, bows, flowers, cake, and sparkling grape juice for a toast.

When the music started to play, a physical therapist wheeled Jerry out of his room. Upon seeing his daughter, who was dressed in a white dress, standing at the end of the hallway, he was so overcome with emotion that he put his head in his hands and began to cry.

“He was not the only one,” the status update stated. “There was not a dry eye in the ICU.”

The status update stated that Chelsea was just expecting to say her vows in her father's room.

“Instead, the team at NMC took matters into their own hands to make this surprise marriage the best experience it could be for the entire family,” the status update stated. “What an amazing example of going above and beyond. Way to go team and congratulations to the newly married couple!”
