Father of Hemphill infant allegedly shaken to death by mom's boyfriend speaks

SABINE COUNTY, TX (KTRE) - An East Texas man mourns the death of his daughter after she was allegedly shaken to death by her mother's boyfriend.

Tracie Candanosa has not come to terms with his daughter Sophia's death.

"I won't get to watch my daughter grow up," said Candanosa.

Sophia would have turned six months old this past Wednesday.

"She had me wrapped around her fingers since she was born," he said.

On the morning of Friday, November 7, Sophia was rushed to the Sabine County Hospital after she suddenly stopped breathing. She was then flown to Texas Children Hospital in Houston, but there was little that they could do to save her. Sophia died at 3 p.m. the next day.

"The most emotion that I feel is sadness," Candanosa said.

According to the Sabine County Sheriff's Office, prior to being taken to the hospital, Sophia was in the care of her mother's boyfriend, Matthew Hudson, while her mother was at work. Hudson was arrested Tuesday on murder charges. His bond was set at $250,000 and he remains in the Sabine County Jail.

As the family waits to see where Hudson's case goes, the family is plagued with the task of burying the infant.

"I don't have the money for a funeral," Candanosa said.

A GoFund Me account has been set up in Sophia's name. Candanosa said he just wants to give his daughter a proper burial. He is hoping to raise $5,000 and to bury Sophia by the end of next week.

Candanosa said his daughter was a happy baby and that's how he will remember her.
