JASPER COUNTY, TX (KTRE) -

Deputies with the Jasper County Sheriff's Office are looking for a couple they believe are connected to the death of an elderly man who had been reported missing.

The man, Herbert Deaton, 85, was found dead Thursday just feet away from his house.

“Mr. Deaton was reported missing by his home health care workers,” said Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman.

Newman said Deaton was reported missing after he missed a scheduled doctor's appointment.

On Thursday, sheriff's deputies made a welfare check at Deaton's residence. The sheriff said while his deputies were searching the house something caught his attention.

"I went west of the house in a clear cut when I detected an odor,” Newman said.

The smell led Newman straight to Deaton's body.

He added that the body appeared to have been there for days, and as of now, they are treating the case as a homicide.

Newman said he thinks Robert Kelly Mounts, 48, and his girlfriend Ashley Nicole Lewis, 29, might know what happened to Deaton. However, he added the couple was nowhere to be found

He further explained that Lewis worked for Deaton.

“They are both con artists,” Newman said. “They are known to go to churches and ask for help and assistance. Mount was last seen driving Mr. Deaton's truck and using Deaton's credit cards.

Deaton's 2011 Silver Chevrolet truck license plate number is CZJ6127.

If you have any information about the couple's, whereabouts please contact your local law enforcement.
