PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Stephen F. Austin head coach Clint Conque has been announced as one of 20 finalists for the 2014 Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award, announced today by The Sports Network FCS.
This is the fourth time Conque has been named a finalist for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year as he is the only Southland Conference coach named to the list.
Conque has helped guide SFA to a 7-4 record in 2014, already a four-game improvement from 2013's 3-9 campaign. He has guided the Lumberjacks to a pair of top-10 victories, defeating eighth-ranked Southeastern Louisiana 27-17 on Oct. 25 before toppling sixth-ranked McNeese State 31-16 in Lake Charles on Nov. 8.
Under Conque's tutelage, SFA has ranked among the nation's best in a handful of statistical categories. As a team, the Lumberjacks rank sixth in first downs (274), 12th in completion percentage (66.1%), 13th in sacks (2.91), 15th in total offense (477.0 ypg) and 19th in scoring offense (35.3 ppg).
SFA has made a pair of appearances in the top-25 this season, the first time the Lumberjacks have cracked the national rankings since 2011. In addition, Conque has helped SFA to a 3-1 road mark on the season, which is the best road record in the Southland Conference after the `Jacks went winless away from Nacogdoches from 2011 through the first game of 2014.
In his first season at SFA and his 15th as a head coach, Conque has compiled a 112-63 (.640) overall record and is 37-19 (.661) in Southland Conference games. He has assured himself a winning season for the fifth-straight season and the 12th time in his 15-year career as a head coach, marking the first winning season at SFA since 2011.
Conque and the Lumberjacks take to the field for the final time of the 2014 regular season Saturday hosting border rival Northwestern State in the annual Battle for Chief Caddo. Kickoff against the Demons is set for 3 p.m. at Homer Bryce Stadium as SFA needs a win to keep their possible playoff chances alive.
