SFA earns bid to NCAA playoffs

From SFA Athletics

NACOGDOCHES, TX - Stephen F. Austin will be one of the 24 Football Championship Subdivision teams competing for the 2014 national championship. The Lumberjacks received an at-large big and will face Northern Iowa Saturday, Nov. 29th, at the UNI Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

"Obviously we're tremendously excited for this opportunity," said head coach Clint Conque. "We felt we had a very good resume and are very excited to get a chance to compete for the national championship. For these players to get to extend their season and have an opportunity to experience the postseason will mean a great deal for the future of this program."

This will be the Lumberjacks' seventh appearance in the FCS playoffs since making the move to Division I and their first since 2010. SFA has compiled a 7-6 (.538) record in the playoffs, including a run to the national championship game in 1989. This will be the first time SFA and Northern Iowa will meet in the postseason as the Lumberjacks are 3-6 (.333) all-time against the Panthers, including a 2-3 mark at the UNI Dome.

SFA was one of three Southland Conference teams to earn a bid among the 24-team field with Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana also being selected. The Bearkats and Lions will square off against each other in the first round of the playoffs Saturday as the two teams did not face each other during the regular season.

Ticket information for Saturday's game will be available soon. Contact the SFA Ticket Office at (936) 468-JACK (5225) for information.
